Where to go Next
Our Pastor, the Rev. John W. Brewster, Jr., received his call to the ministry while serving under the leadership of Dr Calvin Woods, senior pastor of The Greater Liberty Baptist Church in New Orleans. He was subsequently licensed to preach and ordained as a Minister through the Ordination Council First District Association. A high school honors student, he served in the United States Air Force and subsequently attended the American Conservatory School of Music in Chicago, Illinois. After marriage, he continued his strive for educational excellence by obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master’s Degree in Christian Counseling, from Sarasota Academy of Christian Counseling, Sarasota, Florida. He has served and continues to serve on numerous Boards to include but not limited to: the Asheville/Buncombe Christian Ministry, the Asheville/Buncombe Fair Housing Commission, Habitat for Humanities, the New City Christian School Board, and another local Board which was instrumental in obtaining clearance to mainstream special needs children into the Asheville City Schools, etc.
The Church has flourished under Rev. Brewster’s leadership to include among others: completion of a new sanctuary, renovation of the men’s bathrooms and the Convention Hall (fondly known as the “Hut”), purchase of new kitchen appliances, an electric organ, a drum set and PA system, new air conditioner, paving of the Church parking lot, purchase of new Bibles and hymnals and a Church van, paying off the old church mortgage, chimney repaired, new carpet in sanctuary, upholstering of pulpit chairs, repair and restoration of lighting fixtures, installation of ceiling fans, new gutters/facial boards and painting, light at entrance of parking lot, baptismal pool installed, new communion vessels and cloths, furnace overhauled, rails at church entrance, handicap ramp, new Bibles and Hymnals, new office equipment, cushion for pews, new sound system, organ, remodeling of Convention Hall, new heating/cooling system, remodeled restrooms, new kitchen appliances, remodeling and renovation of church parsonage, purchase of 12-16 passenger van, roof repairs, purchase of several adjacent parcels of real properties, building expansion project, new sanctuary and remodeling of former sanctuary into new vestibule, etc. Additionally, new Ministries have flourished under Pastor Brewster to include a Safety and Disaster Response Ministry and a Health and Wellness Ministry.
Pastor Brewster’s leadership has been profound, a learned and educated man, he is articulate, informed and a staunch supporter of education. Pastor Brewster, with the help of like minded folks, welcomed new tenants to the Church’s building in 2006 with the opening of the New Christian School serving grades K-1 to 3. New Christian City School, repeating history by serving primarily African American children, flourished over the years with additions and renovations to accommodate adding 4th grade. As New City Christian School continued to increase in enrollment, the desire for internal academic expansion intensified to add more grades but, it became painfully obvious that the School had outgrown the location. In 2013, New City Christian School made the hard but necessary decision to relocate to a bigger facility, moving from the Walton Street address to its new home at Trinity Baptist Church located at 156 Shelburne Road, Asheville, NC. Despite the absence of the New City Christian School occupation of the facilities offered by TABERNACLE MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH, Pastor Brewster along with the Church continues to offer its support both financially and spiritually to the school.
